The
New Solo, Acoustic Album is Here
Peter's brand new album, Notes from Elsewhere
(Signature Sounds) is a retrospective collection of the
very best songs he has written and performed over his 15 year
recording career. Recorded solo in a studio, with just an
acoustic guitar, these are fresh takes on songs that have
become fan and critic favorites over the years. While his
previous band-backed albums showcased the songs, these solo
versions allow each song to shine on its own demonstrating
Peter's strengths as a songwriter.

February 2006 Recently, Peter recorded a version of the Peter
Case song "Hidden Love" for inclusion on a tribute
compilation entitled A Case for Case. The three-CD collection
was produced by Hungry for Music, a non-profit organization
dedicated to providing musical experiences for underprivileged
children. Other Peter Case fans on the tribute include Chris
Smither, Richard Buckner, Victoria Williams, Todd Snider, Jeffrey
Foucault, and John Prine. The record is in stores now and is
also available for purchase in the Online
Store.
January 2006 Hayward Williams has released an EP, Trench
Foot, which I produced for him. (And by "produced",
I mean he came to my house, I set up my portable recording rig,
he sang the songs a few times, and pretty soon we were banging
on furniture with a spatula.) I also played lap steel, slide
guitar, and did some singing - you can check out the record,
and Hayward's whole deal, at haywardwilliams.com.
He's got it going on, and I'm enjoying being around to see it.
December 2005 David Goodrich has made music for... oh, let's say thirty
years, give or take. A small but remarkable portion of the last
ten or so has occurred within my earshot. From after-hours sessions
at our old day job at The Music Emporium to writing together
in apartments and backstage rooms; from playing on eight of
my records and producing three of them to touring many corners
of this bright continent and beyond; and of course in countless
after-gig sessions with friends and strangers, he's an uncannily
constant presence. With respect to music there seems to be some
sort of perpetual-motion machine spinning away in his chest;
what he does with me might amount to a quarter of what he does.
(And I keep him busy!)
He's just released his third solo record, Dust
of Many Horses, and it's beautiful. It's another tip of
the iceberg he's been building all along, clear and lucid. Eight
of the compositions are his, one co-written with Kris Delmhorst,
one by Kurt Cobain, and one by John Coltrane. The measure of
his writing is that his own tune, "Truro", sits between
Cobain and Coltrane, and it holds its own there, a marvel of
compact meaning, combining surprise and inevitability.
Words are poor tools here. This is like trying
to describe the smell of the front hall of your childhood home,
or the color of water. It's guitar-based music, but it's not
guitar music. It's music. I don't even know what kind. Ellington
said there were only two kinds: good and bad. This is the good
kind. I think Ellington would have agreed with me on that.
Anyway, in case it's not clear already, I highly
recommend this record for your listening pleasure.
Thanks.
-Peter Mulvey
p.s. I actually play on one of the tracks, and
Kris Delmhorst plays and lends her voice to another. So we've
got that going for us. Which is nice.

Mulvey Music in new DVD Origin of the Species, an independent film by
David Nicholl starring Amanda Peet and featuring Peter's song
"Take This" is now available on DVD.
Excerpt from The
Washington Post Concert Review:
"Peter Mulvey shows, rather than tells, the details of
his songs' emotional landscapes... He favors plain-spokenness
over screams and thoroughness over speed... Walt Whitman-like
catalogues of images that blended into cinematic visions of
love and corruption... [the] audience was riveted to every note."

A while back, Peter was featured on the NPR program "Weekend
Edition". The show's host, Liane Hansen traveled to Boston
to go into the subway with Peter, and see what it's really like
to perform and record underground.
